August 2010 Alaska Photo Workshop

The Maclaren River Lodge adventure will be our biggest workshop to date.  We’ll have TONS of opportunities to stop along the way for macros, panos and everything in between.  We’ll have lots of time to discuss gear, light, framing, perspective and more!  Space is limited so be sure to sign up today by sending us an email.

Details:

  • Date: August 7 & 8, 2010
  • Time: Early Saturday morning to late Sunday evening
  • Location: Fairbanks to Maclaren River Lodge (42 mile Denali Hwy from Paxon) and back
  • Registration Fee: $250/person ($220/person if sharing a room)

Rules:

  1. Bring your own camera / laptop gear.
  2. Bring your camera manual if you don’t know how to use your camera.
  3. You should provide your own snacks and meals.  Maclaren Lodge does have a kitchen which you can order from.  Average meals range from $10-$20.  We should be at Maclaren for supper on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.  However, breakfast and lunch on Saturday as well as lunch and supper on Sunday you should plan on arranging for yourself.
  4. If you want to share a room, it is up to you to find a second person
  5. We provide the transportation and lodging.

Gear to bring:

  • Camera. A dSLR is preferred but you could limp by on a point-n-shoot, although you won’t be able to accomplish as much.
  • Lenses/Flashes.
  • Tripod.
  • Laptop.
  • Proper clothes. We’ll be exploring the area so waterproof boots/shoes would be a bonus. It can be cool on the Denali Hwy this time of year so a light or even heavy jacket wouldn’t hurt either.

We’ll meet Saturday morning early.  Probably around 6am.  We’ll pack everyone’s gear into the big van and start the drive.  We’ll be stopping along the way for different photographic opportunities.  We’ll arrive at Maclaren Lodge in the late afternoon to early evening on Saturday.  We’ll leave for Fairbanks in the late morning on Sunday.

Some of the many topics we’ll discuss:

  • how and why to shoot with filters
  • when and why to use HDR
  • how to use depth of field to your advantage
  • how to get a new and different perspective on a subject

For our digital darkroom we’ll be using Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Gimp, Autostitch (for panos), Photomatix (for HDRs) so if you have a laptop with software feel free to bring it along to walk through it with us.

We only have room for 8 participants, so if you plan to attend please RSVP to jason@jasonweed.com.
